Whilst the rest of us gently recover from the excesses of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, our rowers are working hard. Our seniors are preparing for the final selection trials in February and the rest of the Club was in camp at Johnsonville in Gippsland.

Barwon Regatta Results

Updated 31 January 2016

Not all our crews raced at Barwon due to the length of the regatta, 8am to 6.30pm.

However our two youth eights raced with excellent results. Both crew won in great form and well ahead of their rivals. There was period of time when the best school first eights could win youth eights. These days, the Mercs youth eights are back rowing at the standard that they should and leaving the schools in their wake.

Results from Ballarat

Updated 23 January 2016

As expected great results from the Ballarat regatta. Melbourne Grammar was unfortunately too good for our under 21 men’s eight in the under 21 and open races. The volume of racing undertaken by our rowers was significant and was a great preparation for the tough racing later in the season.

Well done to our rowers for this full day of racing in many boats and to our coaches for planning this full day. It was a great preparation for things to come.

Our coaches at camp

A lot of coaches? Yes, but also a lot of rowers, some 54 of them. This is a massive undertaking and is organised by team manager Jenny Fraumano and head coach Simon Gadsden.

The first report from camp was that it was very damp with constant rain for the first two days.

Mercantile members still dominate selection trial invitation list

Updated 5th January 2016

Our senior rowers are preparing for the final Olympic Selection Trials in February. Mercantile members comprise 17% of those participating, more than any other Club. Most of these members are from the women’s sweep and sculling group. Given the number of Mercs sweep rowers and given that Australia has not qualified any women’s sweep crews, we hold our breath to see whether the women’s sweep group can show the selectors that they are Olympic finalist standard and worthy of attempting qualification.

There were some great performances from our members in the first trials. Of particular note was Jen Cleary who took number two spot in women’s sculling.

The Mercs members still in the squad are:

Fiona Albert

Sarah Banting

Katrina Bateman

Jennifer Cleary

Madeline Cordner

David Crawshay

Addy Dunkley-Smith

Josh Dunkley-Smith

Josh Hooper

Hannah Lewis

John Linke

Jess Morrison

From the archives comes a picture of an earlier Mercantile camp in 1906. I hope that Jenny Fraumano has the catering in order and that our rowers do not have shot their dinner as in 1906!

Mercantile zootie spotted at…..

Published 5th January 2016

Our members are an intrepid bunch with Mercantile zooties being found everywhere. This month our entry comes from some masters rowers who spent time late in 2015 sculling some of the canals of France. Jeff Lawrence reports that: the following pictures were all taken at the Malpas tunnel, an approx 200 metre tunnel in the canal du midi. It was made through a mountain in 1679 in order for the canal to avoid a huge detour and expensive river crossing. A real feat of engineering. An earlier drainage tunnel had already been built in this mountain and subsequently a major railway tunnel was also dug just below the canal that we rowed through.

Included in this group were Mercantile members Jeff Lawrence, Bill Webster and Rod Edwards.

The formal zootie shot was taken of Bill Webster at the tunnel entrance.
