Welcome to the October edition of The Mercantilian, a particularly special one, as we celebrate an incredible milestone: 58 years of continuous publication. Since the first issue rolled off the typewriter in 1967 under the guidance of Simon Newcomb and his dedicated team, The Mercantilian has stood as the voice of Mercantile Rowing Club.
Across nearly six decades, this newsletter has captured triumphs on the water, growth off it, the evolution of our club culture, and the people who have shaped Mercs into the home we know today. It’s a legacy built issue by issue, volunteer by volunteer, story by story and we’re proud to carry it forward.
This month’s edition continues that tradition, sharing updates from across the squads, celebrating achievements, and highlighting the community spirit that keeps Mercantile thriving. As we head into the thick of the spring racing calendar, there’s much to look forward to both in this issue and in the months ahead.
Here’s to 58 years of The Mercantilian, and to many more to come.
