The historic Rutherglen Regatta was renown for being the New Years Day regatta for decades, the last of the Christmas regatta series. Then it was moved to the second weekend in January for many years. The threat of bush fires and heat exceeding RV heat limits in January, has forced the regatta to a far earlier slot.
Held on the scenic Lake Moodemere, it is the quintessential bush regatta. There are few facilities and the regatta springs up annually on the banks of the lake. It is simply delightful.
Club member Paul Somerville remains the President of the Rutherglen Lake Rowing Club and also one of the key organisers of this event. The regatta is run by the Murray Rowing Association, an association of local rowing clubs. It is one of the oldest continuously run regattas in Australia, commencing in 1860.
